8 Questions you Should Ask Before Hiring your Wedding Planner

We only a few super special days in our lives. Of those days, your wedding day is probably the most special of all. As a result, it should be handled with the utmost care and consideration. This is why you should be very careful when choosing a wedding planner. In this spirit, we thought it would be a good idea to share what we consider the 8 most important questions to ask any planner you’re considering.

1. How many weddings have you planned that are comparable to ours in size and budget?
Probably the very first thing you should ask. Obviously, you’ll also want to find out how long the planner has been in business, the types of weddings they’ve planned, and how their educational background relates to wedding planning. Be sure to ask for references and testimonials too.

2. How many clients do you take on at one time?

Obviously, it’s important to know that the planner will be able to give your event adequate attention. If they’re too busy, they may not be able to give your wedding the attention it deserves.
You also want to know how many weddings they’re currently working on. This will give you an idea as to how successful their business is and give you an idea of how much time they can devote to yours. If you’re planning a large wedding, you’re going to want to find someone who can dedicate a large amount of time to your special day.

3. What Vendors do you work with? What vendors do I need to contract?
Most wedding planners, like us here at Special Event DJz, have a list of preferred vendors that they’ve built excellent relationships with over the years. Long standing relationships with venues, caterers,and the like can sometimes even help you save a little cash.

4. How much do your charge for your services?
This one is a no-brainer, but we’re going to mention it anyway. You’ve got to know how much cash they’re going to want for their services. Be sure to review their packages, see if they offer things like day of planning, full-service planning, partial service planning, and the like. Knowing this helps you build your budget appropriately…obviously.

5. Is it just you, or will there be others involved in the services?
If it’s a big deal type wedding, your planner may need to some help to make everything work. If they are use assistants, you’ll want to know how to get in contact and who your primary information source will be for everything.

6. What is your preferred method of communication with your clients?
Constant communication is a necessity, so your want to know the quickest and most efficient way to get in touch with your planner. Definitely ask if they prefer a text, email, and/or call. This will save a lot of headaches down the road.

7. What is your emergency plan?
Great planners always have backup contingencies in place should something not go as planned. The planner should be able to tell you about all the precautions they take and how they handle any unforeseen issues that may arise.

8. May I review your agreement?
Ever heard of the Latin phrase “caveat emptor”? If not, it means buyer beware. In any case where a contract or written agreement is required, you should always review the agreement before signing or giving anyone any cash. Plus, the contract should explain all of their services, their fees, and any possible additional fees they may charge. It’s just good business.
